What is “Presentations” in Gallery Application?

Presentations in Gallery Application

Some of you may already know what is inside “Presentations” section in the S60 3rd Edition’s Gallery application. When I first saw it, I was thinking about Power Point presentation files? I was totally wrong… Well, may be I was the only fan of S60 phones who doesn’t know the usage of Presentations inside Gallery application. So, what files are listed inside Presentations section? The answer is SVG-T files. In some of the latest S60 phones, such as Nokia N73 and N97, Presentations section includes Flash Lite files as well.

What is SVG-T? SVG-T (Scalable Vector Graphics Tiny) is a type of vector graphics optimized for mobile devices. It is a subset of SVGZ, which is more general vector graphics standard defined by World Wide Web Consortium. SVG-T has been used extensively in S60 platform since Nokia N90. All S60 3rd phones already support SVG-T. All the icons, for example, are in SVG-T format.

The reason why S60 chose SVG-T was because it is scalable. As you may know, latest S60 phones have several different resolutions. Using SVG-T will allow icons to be scaled nicely (compared to bitmap graphics).

Not only graphics, SVG-T supports animation too. The following screenshots shows animation from SVG-T file.
