Setting Compass on Nokia N97
Nokia N97 has an internal compass is used to improve accuracy of determining the azimuth and helps the default mapping applications to automatically orients any map to the direction you are facing. Such compass can determine how a user is turned toward north direction. With geographical coordinates of a target point, the device itself (fixed by satellite navigation) and direction in which the user is turned, the device can determine direction in which the user should go.
Magnetic compass also reacts immediately to changes of direction when the user is walking. To check the status of the compass, go to the Maps view.
In the right corner you can see the compass indicator :
- When the compass is enabled, the circle around the compass is green, and the map view rotates automatically according to the direction to which the top of the device is pointing.
- If the indicator is yellow, the accuracy of the compass is low.
- If the indicator is red, the compass is not calibrated.
- When the compass is not turned on, the circle around the compass is white, and the map view does not rotate automatically.
The compass should always be properly calibrated. To calibrate the compass:
- Ensure that the device sensors are on.
- Select Menu > Settings > Phone > Sensor settings > Sensors > On.
- Select Menu > Maps.
- The compass is active by default.
- Rotate the device around all axes in a continuous movement until the calibration indicator changes its color to green.
- To turn off the compass, select Options > Tools > Turn compass off. Turning off the compass is only valid for the current session. When you open Maps the next time, it will be turned on automatically. Electromagnetic fields, large metal objects, and other external circumstances may reduce the accuracy of the compass. Never rely solely on the device compass.
